Level 1 Joists     The underfloor framing. This design: what was I thinking? A couple lines on a drawing translate to months of work.
Cleaning the subfloor earth Mudsill and bottom plate The joists
Friends bring moral support in winter
Rim joists are screwed to foundation via huge "Titen" screws. Two levels of mudsilll must be cut and bored, and topped by the bottom plate. About half the joists had to be doubled because the first floor is a thin concrete slab.

1. Cleaning the subfloor earth
The forms were stripped and the concrete contractor pulled out. It is Sepember 2023.
This is the floor of an 18" crawl space. I do not want to "crawl" on rocks and concrete debris.

2. Mudsill and bottom plate
This great heap of expensive lumber will become joists and bottom plates. Is is mid-September 2023, wonderful working conditions. But one guy with a full-time job cannot go fast.

County plan check rejected our design three times. Finally the county accepted this one.

3. The joists
No right angles; half the joists must be doubled. The perimeter consists of two mudsills (3x6, 4x6) and a bottom plate. Hundreds of holes required. This work required months.

Diggiing is less stressful than placing joists. This huge heap of extra dirt must be whittled down. It is obstructing Noriko's labyrinth project, letter her off the hook. "Oh, I'll just wait until the building is done." Not a chance.

It is a lot of work. None of the joists are cut at 90 degrees. Most of the joists are doubled.
