Costume Museum, Kyoto     Delirious Heiyan-Kyo, a visit via dolls to the World of the Shining Prince.
Famous scenes Textile and costume Pastimes of court ladies
The name Fuzoku Hakubutsukan (Costume Museum in English) is misleading. It turned out to be mostly of Heian period when 'The Tale of Genji' takes place, not only costumes but culture as well.
Thanks to "Tale of Genji", the Heian era diaries and other sources we have extremely specific accounts of Heian material culture. Bruce was delighted to find this meticulous replica of the Heian cult of beauty.

1. Famous scenes
The exhibit displayed dolls (about a foot in height) dressed in Heian era costumes showing scenes from 'Tale of Genji'.

2. Textile and costume
"On that day all the ladies in attendance on His Majesty had made a small error in matching the colors at the openings of her sleeves. When she approached His Majesty to put something in order, the High Court Nobles and Senior Courtiers who were standing nearby noticed the mistake and stared at her. This was a source of lively regret to Lady Saisho and the others. It was not really such a serious lapse of taste; only the colour of her robes was a shade too pale at the opening."

"The empress was wearing the usual scarlet robe, under which she had kimonos of light plum, light green and yellow rose. His Majesty's outer robe was made of grape-colored brocade; underneath he had a willow-green kimono and, below that, one of pure white...Lady Nakazukasa's robe, which was also of grape-colored bocade, hung loosely over a plain jacket of green and cherry.' --- The Tale of Genji -Page 10, 11, and 13
