Building of Yakushiji had orijinally begun in 680 in Fujiwarakyo under Emperor Tenmu.It was moved to the present location when the capital was moved to Nara in early 8th century. Many buildings were destroyed in 973 fire and in 1528 fire and there was some attempt to rebuild. But it was not until 1967 the then chief priest Takada Koin who became serious in rebuilding Yakushiji. Most recent being the rebuilding of East Pagoda from 2019 to 2021. the whole complex was designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

Toshodaiji temple was built by Ganjin, a Buddhist priest from China during Tang dynasty, in 759. After mny attempts to reach Japan he was finally able to land in 753. His mission was to bring laws and rules to Buddhism in Japan. . It was designated UNESCO World Heritage site along with Yakushiji in 1998.

Kasuga Taisha Shrine was built in 768 to protect the capital and the people of Nara. The main god was supposed to have arrived on white deer and so deer is treated to be a messenger of god. Since the founder Fujiwara family also worshipped Buddhism at kofukuji, the shrines was closely related to Kofukuji and has many architectural features of temple. In 1868, Shito and Buddhism were separated by the Meiji government and became independent but the relationship with Kofukuji remains. It was designated UNESCO World heritage site in 1998 as part of cultural treasure of Nara.
