Kasuga Taisha Shrine was built in 768 to protect the capital and the people of Nara. The main god was supposed to have arrived on white deer and so deer is treated to be a messenger of god. Since the founder Fujiwara family also worshipped Buddhism at kofukuji, the shrines was closely related to Kofukuji and has many architectural features of temple. In 1868, Shito and Buddhism were separated by the Meiji government and became independent but the relationship with Kofukuji remains.
