Biva and Len's wedding | ||||
In 1973 Richard Baker, the head of Green Gulch Zen Center, purchased an unwanted old Japanese temple and imports it from Japan to the Sierra foothills. It was to be a second home for himself, not a public building or a part of Zen Center. His friends included poet Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsburg and others of that circle. Gary Snyder's residence is nearby. The volunteer labor of Buddhism students and Gary Snyder's neighbors were seduced to erect it. A professional carpenter from Japan resided on site for the duration. A translator was needed. |
Shoboan was a priest's residence in Daitokuji in Kyoto. They were going to rebuild anew and discard the old one, which Len rescued and had it shipped to California. It was to be his brother-in-law Richard Baker's, then a chief priest at the Zen Center in San Francisco, second residence. The building was dismantled in Japan in pieces and shipped to Nevada City, California.
