Father was assigned as Consul-General to South Africa from 1972 to 1975. The Japanese were designated as honorary Whites during the Apartheid because of their economic status. I was out of school for the summer and was able to accompany them for a month. It was not easy to live there.

4. Pretoria and vicinity
Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. Bacause of the difficulty in going anywhere as Japanese in Apartheid, the Japanese government had purchased the Consul-General's residence with a tennis court and a swimming pool, so that the staffs could recreate on weekends.

5. Johanesburg and vicinity
Soweto, a black township, was located near Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. It was created to segregate the blacks from whites who lived in the city proper. From what I learned, it was created with the intention that the town could be bombed should there be any trouble. The blacks needed special IDs and permits to go anywere.

6. Capetown
Cape Town is a port city at the south coast of South Africa. It was developed by the Dutch East India Company and now the seat of the Parliament of South Africa. Greener and more scenic than Pretoria, tourists love the town. We drove to Cape Town from Pretoria, stopping at a wine farm and an university on the way.

8. Durban and vicinity
On the way to Durban, I saw many indigenous houses, one of them in the process of being built. I asked the driver to stop the car and ask if I could take photos. It was one of the most ecological structures I'd seen. Durban was the third largest city on the east coast. It was known to have a large Indian population.
