China '77     Only a year after my last visit, I could feel the chaange in air. People were more out on the streets and wearing color.
China '77

1. Shanghai '77
I went back to China in the summer of 1977. The change was evident. It was brighter, not just because of the weather but in people's faces. The Gang of Four had been denounced and arrested. There was a sense that China was about to change. I could even borrow a bicycle and ride around the city taking pictures.

In Nanjing, we were shown the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, which had just been completed. It was a double-decked truss bridge with the top deck used by cars and the lower deck by the railroad. We also visited the Sun Yat-sen Mauoleum. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) is considered 'The father of Modern China" both in mainland China and in Taiwan for fighting against Imperial Qing government and after the 1911 Rovolution, founded the Republic of China.
